JAMMU, Aug 8: Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) organized a protest today against the Provost Hostels at Jammu University, under the leadership of Sunil Singh Roudhan (President of ABVP’s Jammu University Unit), here.

The protest was held to demand adequate hostel accommodations for students belonging to Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), Reserved Backward Area (RBA), Scheduled Castes (ALC), and Women Underprivileged (WUP) categories and reopen adjustment in Hostels.

The agitation comes after a memorandum was submitted on 23 January 2023 to the Vice Chancellor, Provost Hostels, and Dean of Student Welfare (DSW) addressing the pressing need for hostels and open adjustments for students falling under the aforementioned categories. Despite the passage of nearly eight months, the demands outlined in the memorandum have not been fulfilled, prompting ABVP to come on the road.

The protest commenced with ABVP members and students gathering outside the Provost’s Office, continuing for approximately one and a half hours. Following that, the demonstration shifted to the Dean of Student Welfare’s office, where it persisted for about two hours. The administration eventually arranged a meeting with ABVP representatives and students, during which they engaged in constructive dialogues and assured the resolution of the issue within the next two days.

Prominent members of ABVP who participated in the protest included Sunil Singh Roudhan (President of ABVP Jammu University Unit), Akarshit Sharma (vice president),Rahul Singh (Jt.sec),Aryan Gupta(president of law school team),Sanjeev (Prez of law deptt.abvp team),Sahil Choudhary (Incharge Of Commerce Deptt. ABVP),Shivam Sharma (Incharge Of Law Deptt.),Manik Goswami(Jt. Sec of ABVP Jammu Mahanagar), Kuldeep Sharma (Incharge of Dogri Deptt).

During interactions with the media, ABVP expressed its concerns and intentions. The organization conveyed a strong message to the administration, warning that if the issue at hand remains unresolved, the protests will escalate further and extend throughout the University. ABVP remains committed to securing equitable accommodations for all students and ensuring that their demands are met.

The student body urges the administration to take prompt and effective action to address the grievances and fulfill the long-standing demands of providing hostel facilities to students from EWS, RBA, ALC, and WUP categories and reopen adjustment in hostels.
